Tandem Bike Issues

Let me start off by saying that I love my wife.   We had a wonderful weekend retreat at Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Indiana.  We stayed at a friends cottage and drove up with their KHS tandem bike on the bike rack.  It was getting toward the end of our stay there and we had not yet rode on the bike.  So we took it out for a spin.

Immediately I knew that there were going to be issues when she is saying, “I can’t see anything!”  and is frantically in search for the brakes.  We have only gone around 30 feet.

I am used to pedaling my road bike at anywhere from 80 to 100 RPMs.   She is a slow pedaler and is constantly asking me to slow down.

There is a gradual sloping grade to the road and as we coast we feel the gentle breeze generated by the slight increase in speed.  She is gently encouraging me to apply the brakes to slow down.

We barely make it down to the end of the private drive,  possibly 1/4 mile.  I realize it is time to go back to the house, park the bike, and go back to reading a book on the back patio next to the lake.

I don’t remember whether we have ridden on a tandem bike before.  I really do love my wife, but I am sure that we will not be attempting that again.  :-)
